Making... Games is my game?

Posted by PsychoGenetiX Jul. 30, 2008 @ 2:47 PM EDT

So last week i came up with this AWESOME game idea.
its a space-set MMORPG.

STORY: Humanity has left earth because of war over territory and has been suddenly, and violently transported to a galaxy placed in the other side of the universe.
a thousand years later, after humanity has settled into an earth-like planet which they called Home, they decided to explore this new, unknown universe they had been placed in. But, they did not have the technology required. So they gave up on the entire plan. Until one day a simple miner rammed into a black sphere while on his duty in a near asteroid field. The sphere then took on a glowing bright green color, and flew away towards a distant, dark structure. the confuzed miner followed the sphere towards
the structure and was then shocked by a super-bright light, coming from the structure, and then saw something that resembled what he saw on a holovision show he once used to watch when he was but a child. He was travelling in sub-light speed, fast enough to reach a far solar system within hours.
Meanwhile, back on planet Home, CommLink inc. Head Command receives a distress call from a distant star. It was the miner. after 5 minutes of explanation, he transferred the coordinates of the dark structure that shot him that far away from home. seconds later, contact with the miner was lost, and the miner was gone forever. His life was taken away, but not in vein. The discovery of this alien structure led to a new solar system, and a scanner that scanned for the special type of radiation let out by the structure has been developed, which led to finding a network of jumpgates that had cleared a path for humanity to civilize tens of solar systems.

You are a lone pilot, out there to be free to choose which profession to take on and make money in whatever way you choose to, and eventually find out why humanity is there and how it got there.

GAMEPLAY:
Gameplay is based on interacting with the universe around you. you can either mine or go on missions or start your own company for whatever profession you choose or practically do whatever you want to make money. everything in the universe is destructible but planets and planetary stuff like moons, planetoids or other similarly large objects.
There is a large group of mapped solar systems, and all the jumpgates to them are clear and open for passage. in every system there are 0 to 10 undiscovered jumpgates, and you must scan for them. When you find a jumpgate and go through it, you go into unmapped space. These areas of space are potentially dangerous and are for equipped ships only, and your job is to map the system and for that you are rewarded with cash. in game updates, dockable bases will be added in the discovered systems, using a computer to randomly place them next to whatever planet they can be placed next to. Players can open a shop there, to sell items or weapons they made through mining or other interactions with the universe, and players docking with the base can buy or sell to those shops.
The deeper you go into unmapped space, the more dangerous things become. common enemies will be pirates, (probably) other players and sentient objects left after the long gone civilization that once populated this galaxy.

I think some ideas might be dropped, since yeah it might be too expensive to make them.
But nobody has made a good space shooter in like 5 years, so I thought, if nobody makes 'em why dont i make 'em myself?
